Pet of the Month – January: Panther’s Story

Panther came in to see us after having a sore eye for a few days. Using a fluorescein dye test, we diagnosed him with a corneal ulcer. These ulcers can be very painful and often require frequent treatment with eye drops. Unfortunately for Panther, he was feeling quite miserable and wasn't keen on anyone getting close to his eye! After spending a day in hospital with our nursing team bravely trying to give his medications, Panther went home to see if he might tolerate treatment better there - but sadly, he still wasn't having any of it.
Our vets then put their heads together and came up with an alternative approach. Using a technique more commonly seen in horse, they found a way to administer his eye drops in a much calmer, less stressful way. While under heavy sedation, a small tube was placed into the pocket in the corner of Panther's eyelid. It was carefully secured to his face and harness, allowing both us and his owners to give his medication from a distance he was comfortable with. Panther's owners did a fantastic job keeping up with his treatment through the tube until his eye had fully healed and it could be removed.
Luckily, Panther wasn't going through it alone. His brother Blue, stayed by his side at home, offering comfort and a reassuring presence while he recovered. This clever technique helped reduce stress for everyone involved and ensured Panther received the care he needed to recover and protect his eyesight. Eye problems can worsen quickly, so we always recommend getting them checked as soon as possible.
And if your pet isn't a fan of eye drops - don't worry. Where there's a will, there's a way!
Well done Panther!
