New to navigating firework season with your pets? Here’s what you need to know
With fireworks night not far away, it is important that we put things in place to help our pets if they are afraid fireworks. It can be a scary time for our beloved furry friends, but thankfully there are some things that you can do to help them feel better.
DOGS
- Make sure that you take your dog out for their last walk while it is still light outside, as you are less likely to encounter fireworks at this time.
CATS
- Provide your cat with extra litter trays.
- Make sure your cat flap is closed if you have one.
ALL PETS
- Keep your door, windows and curtains closed to help block out any exterior sounds. You can also use your TV or radio to provide continuous sound or play music with a repetitive beat to help mask the bangs.
- Make sure you provide plenty of hiding places for your pets if they don't already have a favourite hiding place, then you can create a safe and relaxing den for them to help them feel protected - never try and pull them. If you have a cupboard, or bathroom in your house with no windows, this can make a good place for them to hide.
- Try and keep them distracted by playing with them or providing them with an activity.
- You can feed your pet earlier to help them settle down for the evening.
- You can reassure your pet and of course provide them comfort if they are seeking it but try not to do this more than you would on any normal day. If you are anxious your pet will pick up on this and it could make them worse. If they are hiding, it is best to leave them where they feel safe.
You can get pheromone sprays for dogs and cats to help them feel less stressed. “Adaptil” is available for dogs, this contains a synthetic copy of the natural appeasing pheromone mother dogs produce.
For cats, you can get Feliway: when cats rub their face on objects, they are leaving pheromones which tell them your home is a safe and secure place. Feliway contains a synthetic copy of this pheromone.
If you pet is really stressed, there is medication available to help keep them calm over the firework period. Don't hesitate to call us on 01324 829989 for more information.
Remember, never punish your pet if their behaviour is ‘bad' when they are frightened. This will make them more distressed and confused.
